Kejadian 17:12
Konteks17:12 Throughout your generations every male among you who is eight days old 1 must be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not one of your descendants.
Kejadian 32:4
Konteks32:4 He commanded them, “This is what you must say to my lord Esau: ‘This is what your servant 2 Jacob says: I have been staying with Laban until now.
Kejadian 43:14
Konteks43:14 May the sovereign God 3 grant you mercy before the man so that he may release 4 your other brother 5 and Benjamin! As for me, if I lose my children I lose them.” 6
Kejadian 50:17
Konteks50:17 ‘Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father.” When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept. 7
[17:12] 1 tn Heb “the son of eight days.”
[32:4] 2 sn Your servant. The narrative recounts Jacob’s groveling in fear before Esau as he calls his brother his “lord,” as if to minimize what had been done twenty years ago.
[43:14] 3 tn Heb “El Shaddai.” See the extended note on the phrase “sovereign God” in Gen 17:1.
[43:14] 4 tn Heb “release to you.” After the jussive this perfect verbal form with prefixed vav (ו) probably indicates logical consequence, as well as temporal sequence.
[43:14] 5 sn Several Jewish commentators suggest that the expression your other brother refers to Joseph. This would mean that Jacob prophesied unwittingly. However, it is much more likely that Simeon is the referent of the phrase “your other brother” (see Gen 42:24).
[43:14] 6 tn Heb “if I am bereaved I am bereaved.” With this fatalistic sounding statement Jacob resolves himself to the possibility of losing both Benjamin and Simeon.
